There are over 6,000 children in foster care in NZ. Many of these foster children arrive at their new placements with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and with their belongings in a black rubbish sack. No child should be made to feel like their belongings are “rubbish” and care givers should be able to focus on the emotional needs when a child arrives, rather than having to run around doing last minute/late night shopping.
Foster Hope are an amazing organisation throughout New Zealand who make up backpacks to be given to children when they are removed from their homes, with a backpack and a carry all bag containing toiletries (toothpaste, shampoo etc) and some items that will show them they are loved (books, soft toys etc).
Since 2018 Therm has donated almost $10,000 worth of gear to Foster Hope Christchurch and Otago. We believe all kids should have access to good quality outdoor gear, and the opportunity to explore the outdoors in all weather. We are so happy to be continuing our work with Foster Hope into 2020.
"Foster Hope Christchurch and Otago were both blessed with a huge pile of winter jackets from Therm last winter. The children who received them were absolutely thrilled. The quantity is way beyond what most children in care receive as clothing allowances only go so far. It was fantastic to see photos of our kids in care exploring outdoors, no matter what the weather was." -Ngarie Worsley, Foster Hope Christchurch
